A Lifetime of Books

I want to build off my post from Tuesday and introduce you to Dan Pelzer.

At some point in 1962, Dan decided to start keeping a list of books he read.

Dan died 63 years later on July 1, 2025. He kept that list going through those years. When his vision stopped him from reading books, he had logged 3,599 books.

According to a Facebook post, all of those books were checked out from the Columbus (OH) Metropolitan Library.

For his funeral, his family published a QR code on the back of the program. After scanning the code, people were taken to a website (what-dan-read) which lets the world see the complete list of books in his journal. As written by Dan’s own hand.

I think once I get the stack of books at my desk whittled down and read next year, I may turn to Dan’s list for some inspiration on what to read next.

Here’s to a life well-lived and well-read!
