Bad Moon Rising

Creedence Clearwater Revival started their 1969 hit “Bad Moon Rising” with the following lyrics:

I see the bad moon arising
I see trouble on the way
I see earthquakes and lightnin’
I see bad times today

For many photographers, a full moon rising is an opportunity to photograph the lunar surface and incorporate the celestial body into landscapes.

NYC-based photographer Dan Martland captured a supermoon last year juxtaposed with city landmarks. His work was noticed by PetaPixel, which published the article “Photographer Captures Supermoon Rising Behind the Statue of Liberty.” That tells the backstory of how Martland created the stunning images.

The tale involves preplanning, improvisation, and a bit of luck. Which is the formula that, in my experience, comes into play for a lot of photographs.
