Colorful birds

Nature is amazing, isn’t it?

From the bold swatches of color in a sunset to the countless varieties of flowers that abound in the spring, nature and color go hand in hand.

HowStuffWorks posted an article a couple of weeks ago titled 38 Colorful Birds You Didn’t Know Exist.

Some of the birds on the list, like the Blue Jay, I get to see fairly regularly in my yard as they visit my bird feeder or scavenge for food. When I see one of these birds, I can’t help but pause and admire its plumage.

But two birds on the list have a special place in my life.

The first is the Scarlet Macaw. My wife and I used to own one, named Mandy. She was a toddler in bird years and was often making mischief and getting scolded. And she could be loud! Her wings were clipped so she couldn’t fly. However, one day, she shocked us by leaping off of her perch near the back door and gliding to the opposite end of the living room. That was the first—and only—time she did that, and it caught me off guard.

We ended up having to rehome Mandy. We were applying to become foster parents, and she was identified as a big risk to our application. Unfortunately, that process didn’t pan out, either.

The other bird on the list that holds a place in my life is the Sun Conure. We put a deposit down on a breeder to adopt a baby conure right after it hatched. The hatchling got sick when it was still a few weeks old and was taken to an exotic animal veterinarian. Unfortunately, it didn’t survive the illness, and we put that plan on hold.

Anyway, the article is worth a scroll through to admire the colors and unique looks of each of the birds that made the list.

Let me know in the comments which of the 38 you consider the most beautiful.
