America Through Advertising

How ironic is it that the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) published an article titled An 1840 selfie to 1960s advertising: Eight images that tell the story of America.

The article takes a look at an exhibition on display at Rijksmuseum titled American Photography running from February 7 to June 9.

The exhibit includes what might be the first selfie ever taken—in 1840 by photographer Henry Fitz Jr.

Looking through the lens of advertising, the exhibit tells the story of America through the decades and how the country has changed. It is a collection of images from famous photographers to those who have never been heard of before.

One can only wonder what kind of story the next hundred years of American advertising photographs will tell future generations.
