Focus on the Eye

Back in the day (ahem!), when I was learning photography, one of my mentors—possibly an instructor—told me about the key to a strong portrait: focus on the eye.

The cover image for this post exemplifies the power of the eye…even the eye of an animal.

The story behind this image is told in the article Magnificent Close-Up Photograph Of A Whale’s Eye Hides Much Sadder Story. The image is of a whale affectionately called Sweet Girl.

The photographer is Rachel Moore, an ocean photographer and advocate. She captured the photo while swimming alongside the juvenile humpback whale near French Polynesia.

Tragically, four days after this photo was taken, Sweet Girl was struck by a fast-moving ship and died as a result of the collision.
