Last week, North America was graced with a lunar eclipse during the early morning hours of Friday, March 14, 2025.
Professional landscape and astrophotographer Dan Zafra traveled from the southwestern United States to the Alaskan wilderness to photograph the lunar eclipse.
Photography website PetaPixel published the article Photographer’s Once-in-a-Lifetime Shots of the Lunar Eclipse and Aurora which looks at the breath-taking combination of Zafra’s photographs: the total lunar eclipse blended with the greenish hues of the Northern lights.
Zafra also published a thirteen-second timelapse sequence on YouTube at Total Lunar Eclipse & Aurora Substorm Timelapse near Fairbanks, Alaska.
For the curious, the article goes into some of the technical details behind Zafra’s trio of cameras he used in the wilderness as well as a glimpse into the post-processing required to maximize the quality of the images.
When you’ve finished reading the article, take a look at Zafra’s work on Capture the Atlas, Facebook, or Instagram.
