More Than Just Golden Arches

It is safe to say that when Richard and Maurice McDonald opened their McDonald’s restaurant in San Bernardino, California, in 1940, they never imagined it becoming a global corporation.

One thing that may go unnoticed by most Americans who know the brand for their Big Mac and Quarter Pounder sandwiches is the menu variety that can be found across the globe:

  • The McArabia Chicken pita sandwich is found in the Middle East.

  • McSpaghetti found in the Philippines

  • Churros in Istanbul

Award-winning photographer Gary He spent years documenting the company’s global presence for his book McAtlas, which was published in November 2024.

Last month, CNN published an article highlighting some of He’s images from McAtlas and insights from an interview with the photographer.

After reading this article, I want to add a copy of McAtlas to my library. With its cover resembling the iconic sesame seed bun of the Big Mac, I am sure this work is enlightening and captivating.
