A somber day in America

Today is Memorial Day, here in the United States. It is a day to honor and remember military personnel who died while serving in the Armed Forces.

The federal holiday occurs on the last Monday of May.

Coincidentally, the Indianapolis 500 race is held on the last Sunday of May. Today’s featured image comes from a race I photographed a few years ago before the start of the race. It was a joint ceremony where recruits were sworn in, and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice were remembered and honored.

I come from a military family. My dad served in the Army. My uncle and one of his sons served in the Air Force. And I am surrounded by thousands of military personnel serving at Shaw AFB. So, the military has a place of reverence in my heart.

On this day, I want to take a moment and say a little prayer for those families left behind when their loved ones passed away while volunteering to serve the country.
