World Sports Photography Contest

(This post’s featured photo is from the article quoted below. It was captured by photographer Howard Lao and was a Gold winner inteh Baseball Category.)

I stumbled across an article today showcasing the 24 Dynamic Winners of the World Sports Photography Awards. This competition received entries from more than 700 photographers in more than 70 countries, all vying for these handful of winning opportunities.

As a sports photographer, I enjoy looking at these contests and seeing what my colleagues are doing around the world. These images inspire me to push harder on assignments and strive to create even more dynamic and captivating images.

I had thought about trying to pick one image as a favorite, but that is an impossible ask. There are things I love about each of these images. I can’t even imagine the challenges faced by the contest judges to rank all of the entries and select the winning images.

This is motivating me to get back into competitions with my own work. Earlier this week, I was looking at entering images in the 2023 South Carolina State Fair photography competition. I have entered prints in other competitions over the years and narrowing things down to one or two top-noth images is difficult. But it is a worthwhile process.

So I have some thinking to do. Perhaps I’ll reach a decision this weekend. Then the real work starts on selecting and tweaking the editing of the entry images. At least I have a photo lab in mind for getting the competition prints ready for display.

Stay tuned…
